What the ss trick is
"SS YouTube" started as an address trick. You open a video in the browser, put the cursor in the address bar and add the two letters ss in front of youtube.com:
The edited address no longer opens YouTube. It opens a different website, ssyoutube.com, which reads the video ID from the address and offers download buttons. That is why people search for ss youtube, ssyoutube com, sstube and download youtube video ss: they remember the letters, not the site.
The ss trick step by step on a computer
- Open the video on youtube.com in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Click once in the address bar so the full address shows, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...
- Put the cursor straight after www. and type ss, so the address reads www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=...
- Press Enter. The browser leaves YouTube and opens ssyoutube.com with the same video ID.
If the address has no www., type ss right before youtube.com. Nothing else may change: the eleven characters after v= are the video ID and must stay exactly as they are.
And on an Android phone
- Play the video in the YouTube app and use Share > Copy link. What you copy is a short youtu.be address.
- Paste it into the Chrome address bar and open it. The video plays in the browser, and the address changes to a full youtube.com one.
- Tap the address bar again, place the cursor right before youtube.com, type ss and press Go.
Placing a cursor between two letters on a small screen usually takes a few tries. Dropping that same youtu.be link into the SSYouTube box on this page saves you steps 2 and 3.
Why the trick is awkward on a phone
- The YouTube app has no address bar. You first have to share the video to a browser before you can edit anything.
- Long addresses are fiddly to edit. One wrong tap and you end up on a search page instead of the video.
- Short links break it. A youtu.be/... link has no youtube.com in it to put ss in front of.
- Redirects and pop-ups. The address takes you to another company's site, with its own ads and rules.
The quicker way: copy the link, paste it here
- Copy the link: Share > Copy link in the app, or the full address on a computer.
- Put it in the SSYouTube box up top. Every form is fine: youtube.com, youtu.be, Shorts, or an address you already changed to ssyoutube.com/watch?v=...
- Press MP4 for the video or MP3 for the audio.

The page opens with the video already in the box and its card ready; you still choose MP4 or MP3 yourself. It reads every link the box reads, from music.youtube.com and m.youtube.com to youtu.be, Shorts and ssyoutube.com. Give it something that is not a YouTube video and you get a clear message, not a guess.
Shorts and the ss trick
A Short has an address like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID. Adding ss turns it into ssyoutube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID; whether that page offers a download is up to that site. Here you can paste the Shorts link as it is, or the ss version you already typed. Both are read, and MP4 keeps the vertical clip as it was uploaded.
When the ss trick does not work
- Enter opens a search page. The browser took the edited text for a search. Check that the address still starts with https:// and has no space in it.
- You land on a page full of ads or on a different site. That is the other site's doing. Close the tab, copy the original YouTube link and paste it here.
- The video will not convert anywhere. Live broadcasts, videos locked by age, private uploads and members-only videos are refused here, and no address trick gets around that. The card under the box shows a short reason.
